To support our farm team, we are currently looking for a Casual Farm Hand to assist with weekend and leave coverage at our farm located near Rakaia, Canterbury. Job Description:
The Casual Farm Hand will work closely with our experienced farm team to assist in various farming operations. This role is essential in ensuring the smooth running of daily tasks, particularly on weekends and during periods when permanent staff are on leave.
Key Responsibilities for Casual Chicken Farm Worker
- Assist with the daily operations of the farm, including monitoring and maintaining the health and welfare of the chickens.
- Support in feeding and watering the poultry according to the farm’s established schedules and guidelines.
- Operate farm machinery, including tractors, to carry out routine tasks such as cleaning sheds and transporting feed.
- Perform general farm maintenance, including cleaning chicken sheds, equipment, and surrounding areas to maintain a hygienic and safe working environment.
- Monitor and report any irregularities in the birds’ health, behavior, or environment to farm supervisors.
- Assist in handling poultry in compliance with animal welfare regulations and farm standards.
- Ensure all work is carried out in accordance with Workplace Health and Safety (WHS) guidelines and contribute to a “safety-first” work culture.
- Be flexible in covering shifts during weekends and public holidays as required.
Work Schedule for Casual Chicken Farm Worker
- Expected to work 4 to 6 hours each Saturday and Sunday.
- Additional hours may be available to cover annual leave and other staff absences on an ad hoc basis.
- Flexibility in scheduling is a plus, as farm work requires adaptability to changing needs.
Skills & Experience Required:
- Prior experience working on a fully environmentally controlled broiler chicken farm is preferred but not mandatory.
- A strong willingness to learn new skills in a dynamic farm environment.
- Experience operating farm machinery such as tractors is advantageous.
- Understanding of Workplace Health and Safety (WHS) protocols to ensure a secure and efficient work environment.
- Physical fitness and the ability to work in an active, hands-on role.
- Strong teamwork and communication skills to collaborate effectively with the farm team.
- A genuine interest in agriculture and a proactive attitude toward farm work.
Requirements for Casual Chicken Farm Worker
- Applicants must be a New Zealand resident, NZ citizen, or hold a valid NZ work visa.
- A valid New Zealand driver’s licence is required.
- Availability to work on weekends and public holidays.
