Key Responsibilities – What You’ll Do
As a truck driver at Sandpiper Truck Services, your primary duty will be to operate and drive straight or articulated trucks to transport a variety of goods and materials across local, provincial, and international routes. Specific responsibilities include:
- Loading and Unloading: Handle cargo with precision and ensure that goods are safely loaded and unloaded at each destination.
- Inspections & Maintenance: Perform pre-trip, en route, and post-trip inspections of vehicles. Oversee preventive maintenance and emergency roadside repairs as needed to ensure vehicle safety and operational readiness.
- Regulatory Compliance: Obtain necessary permits and documents for transporting cargo, particularly for international routes. Maintain and submit detailed logs for hours of service, fuel consumption, and travel distances.
- Safety Protocols: Transport and handle dangerous goods safely by adhering to all provincial and federal safety regulations. Tarping and securing cargo is critical.
- Communication: Relay information to central dispatch, report accidents or incidents, and update the status of deliveries regularly using CB radio systems and other communication methods.
Qualifications & Certifications – What You Need
We provide training, but having the following qualifications will make you a top candidate:
- Education: Secondary (High School) graduation certificate or equivalent.
- Experience: Willing to train, but previous experience in truck driving or logistics is an advantage.
- Licenses & Certifications:
- Class 1 or A Driver’s License (Required)
- Class 3 or D Driver’s License (Optional, but Preferred)
- Air Brakes Endorsement
- CPR & First Aid Certification
- WHMIS (Workplace Hazardous Materials Information System) Certificate
- Hydrogen Sulphide Awareness (H2S) Certificate
- Transportation of Dangerous Goods (TDG) Certificate
- Documentation Expertise: Ability to complete and maintain reports such as driver logs, trip reports, accident/incident reports, and bill of lading documentation.
- Physical Requirements: Capable of handling heavy loads, repetitive tasks, and physically demanding work, including lifting up to 23 kg (50 lbs) regularly.
Work Environment & Conditions
- Physical Demands: This role involves handling heavy cargo and requires a strong attention to detail for safety and compliance. You’ll also need to perform regular inspections and repairs while on the road.
- Work Hours: Full-time hours ranging between 44 to 98 hours per week, with various shift options including day, night, weekends, and overtime. Be prepared for on-call availability when needed.
- Travel & Transportation: You must have your own transportation and a valid driver’s license to commute to the job site. The position requires driving manual transmission vehicles, with travel potentially extending to international routes.
