Position Overview

We are seeking a Family Law Clerk with at least 2 years of direct Family Law experience to join our Newmarket team. This is a full-time, permanent role offering a hybrid work model. You will work with experienced family law attorneys and support clients through challenging legal situations, including child custody cases, divorce proceedings, and more.


Experienced Family Law Clerk Key Responsibilities

  • Legal Practice Management: Use legal management software (such as Clio) to manage client information, schedule appointments, and docket time.
  • Document Preparation: Prepare key legal documents such as DivorceMate files, Briefs, Financial Statements, and Affidavits for divorce cases and other family law matters.
  • Client Support: Assist clients in person and virtually with document preparation, signing, and commissioning during child custody or divorce proceedings.
  • Family Law Rules Knowledge: A strong understanding of Family Law Rules and family court processes. Experience with CaseLines is an asset.
  • Trial Preparation: Assist lawyers with trial preparation for complex cases, including gathering documents for divorce trials. Experience in this area is a plus.
  • Paperless Workflow: Help manage a paperless law office by scanning, saving, and managing documents digitally.
  • Correspondence: Draft final reporting letters, emails, and other client communications for family law cases.
  • File Management: Provide ongoing support to lawyers by managing files and coordinating day-to-day operations.

Experienced Family Law Clerk Qualifications & Skills

  • Education: A diploma in Law Clerk studies or equivalent experience in family law services.
  • Experience: Minimum 2 years of experience as a Family Law Clerk (required), with a focus on divorce cases, child custody disputes, and property division.
  • Software Skills: Proficiency in Microsoft Office, Adobe, and Legal Practice Management Software (Clio preferred).
  • Communication: Excellent written and verbal communication skills, especially when dealing with sensitive family law matters such as spousal support or child custody.
  • Organizational Skills: Strong ability to prioritize tasks and meet deadlines in a family law firm setting.
  • Confidentiality: Maintain confidentiality and exercise discretion in handling sensitive legal matters.
  • Tech-Savvy: Embrace new technology and adapt to a paperless law office environment.
