We are hiring a Veterinary Technician & Farm Assistant at Massey University’s Large Animal Teaching Unit (LATU). This is a dynamic role involving hands-on animal care and farm management while supporting our Veterinary Science and Animal Science students.

If you’re experienced in animal handling (especially with horses and cattle) and seeking a part-time role, this is an ideal opportunity to work in a leading veterinary program. You’ll assist with teaching practical classes, oversee animal care, and contribute to the smooth operation of our facility. This role offers exposure to a wide variety of animals including sheep, pigs, cows, and alpacas, making it perfect for someone with a farming background.


Key Responsibilities

  • Hands-on animal care with horses, cattle, and other large animals.
  • Maintaining electronic livestock records using advanced software.
  • Collaborating with academic staff to ensure effective veterinary training for students.
  • Ensuring health and safety compliance on the farm.
  • Assisting in practical teaching sessions, focusing on veterinary practices.

Skills & Experience

  • Veterinary technician experience or a strong farming background is essential.
  • Proven animal handling skills, particularly with large animals.
  • Proficiency in using software for stock management.
  • Ability to work in a team environment while also showing initiative.
  • Clean driver’s license is mandatory.
